Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the entire measurement of all the linear walls in the area. For instance, it may require a single 12-foot section of crown molding to cover each short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. room with two 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked for cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be used for miter-cutting crown molding, preferring a power miter saw is preferred since cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, most trim is already equipped with a paint primer, but if you opt for bare wood molding, you should use a coat of primer to the wood and let it dry for at least an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the junction of the wall and ceiling. These labels act as a point of reference while nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Preceding installing the crown molding on the wall, invert it ensuring that it is upright. Recruit an assistant to help you in positioning the molding onto a second ladder and managing it while you proceed. Begin at the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps may sometimes arise between the molding and the walls and ceiling, because rarely are the walls and ceilings absolutely flat. To resolve these spaces, you can fill them up by applying a line of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any remaining gaps at the mitered corners can also be rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, attach painter's tape along the upper and lower sections of the moldings where they intersect the wall and ceiling.
