Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the entire measurement of the straight walls in the area. To illustrate, you might need one 12-foot section of crown molding to trim each lesser wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 square foot area with two 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: To begin the process, the crown molding piece must be measured and indicated before cutting. Even though a manual miter box and saw can be used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a power miter saw is preferred since the cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim already comes featuring a primer coat of paint, but if you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, you should use a coat of primer to the wood then let it cure for at least an hour before attaching it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark the wall studs on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the wall/ceiling connection. These marks will serve as a reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before attaching the crown molding on the wall, invert it so that it is upright. Enlist an assistant to help you in aligning the molding onto a second ladder and managing it while you start. Begin from the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces may sometimes arise between the molding and both the walls and ceiling, because rarely are these walls and ceilings absolutely even. To address these spaces, it's possible to fill them up by using a bead of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any leftover gaps at the mitered corners can also be filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, put painter's tape along the top and bottom edges of the moldings at the points where they meet both the wall and ceiling.
