Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the total length of all the linear walls in your space. For instance, you might need a single 12-foot strip of crown molding to trim every short wall, and two 8-foot sections for every large wall, especially in a 165 square foot area with two 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and marked for cutting. Even though a manual miter box and saw is used for used for miter-cutting crown molding, using a power miter saw can be preferred as the cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, most trim is already equipped with a paint primer, but if you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to the wood then let it dry for no less than an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the wall/ceiling connection. These marks will serve as a reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding to the wall, invert it so that it is in an upright position. Enlist an assistant to help you in aligning the molding onto a second ladder and controlling it as you proceed. Begin from the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps might sometimes appear between the molding and the walls and ceiling, as infrequently are these walls and ceilings perfectly flat. To resolve these spaces, you can fill them up by applying a bead of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any remaining gaps at the mitered corners are also filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, put painter's tape at the upper and lower sections of the moldings at the points where they meet the wall and ceiling.
