Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the total length of the straight walls in your space. For instance, you might need one 12-foot strip of crown molding to trim each short wall, and two 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 square foot area with two 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and indicated before cutting. While a manual miter saw is used for used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a power miter saw can be preferred as the cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, the majority of molding already comes with a primer coat of paint, but should you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to use a coat of primer to the wood and allow it to dry for at least an hour before attaching it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the wall/ceiling connection. These labels will serve as a point of reference while joining the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before attaching the crown molding to the wall, invert it ensuring that it is upright. Recruit an assistant to aid you in aligning the molding on a second ladder and controlling it as you start. Commence at the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps may sometimes arise along the molding and the walls and ceiling, as infrequently are the walls and ceilings perfectly even. To resolve these spaces, it's possible to fill them up by applying a bead of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners can also be filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, put painter's tape along the top and bottom edges of the moldings where they intersect the wall and ceiling.
