Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of the straight walls in the area. For instance, you might need a single 12-foot strip of crown molding to cover each lesser wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. room with two 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and indicated before cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be used for making miter cuts on crown molding, preferring a powered miter saw can be preferred since cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, the majority of molding is already equipped with a primer coat of paint, but if you opt for bare wood molding, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to the wood and let it cure for at least an hour before installing it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the wall/ceiling connection. These marks will serve as a point of reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding to the wall, turn it over so that it is in an upright position. Recruit an assistant to help you in aligning the molding onto a second ladder and managing it while you start. Commence at the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps may sometimes arise along the molding and both the walls and ceiling, as infrequently are these walls and ceilings absolutely flat. To resolve these spaces, you can seal them by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners can also be filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, attach painter's tape at the top and bottom edges of the moldings where they intersect both the wall and ceiling.
