Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of the straight walls in the area. For instance, you might need a single 12-foot strip of crown molding to trim each short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 square foot area with two 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: To begin the process, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked for cutting. While a manual miter box and saw is used for employed for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a powered miter saw can be recommended as cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, the majority of molding is already equipped featuring a paint primer, but should you happen to be using unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to the wood then allow it to cure for at least an hour before installing it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Employ a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label the wall studs on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the junction of the wall and ceiling. These labels act as a reference while nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding to the wall, invert it so that it is in an upright position. Enlist an assistant to help you in aligning the molding on a second ladder and managing it as you proceed. Begin at the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces might sometimes appear along the molding and the walls and ceiling, because rarely are these walls and ceilings perfectly flat. To address these spaces, you can seal them by using a bead of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any remaining gaps at those mitered corners can also be filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, attach painter's tape at the top and bottom edges of the moldings at the points where they meet the wall and ceiling.
