Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of the straight walls in the area. For instance, you might need a single 12-foot section of crown molding to cover each lesser wall, and two 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. room with two 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked before cutting. Even though a manual miter box and saw can be employed for making miter cuts on crown molding, preferring a powered miter saw is recommended since the cuts will be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, the majority of molding is already equipped with a primer coat of paint, but if you happen to be using unpainted raw wood molding, you should use a coat of primer to the wood and let it cure for no less than an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Employ a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the wall/ceiling connection. These labels will serve as a point of reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Preceding installing the crown molding to the wall, invert it ensuring that it is in an upright position. Enlist an assistant to help you in positioning the molding onto a second ladder and controlling it as you start. Begin at the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps might sometimes appear along the molding and the walls and ceiling, as rarely are these walls and ceilings absolutely flat. To address these spaces, it's possible to seal them by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners are also filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, put painter's tape along the top and bottom edges of the moldings where they intersect the wall and ceiling.
