Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the total length of the straight walls in the area. To illustrate, it may require one 12-foot section of crown molding to trim every lesser wall, and two 8-foot sections for every large wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. room with two 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and indicated for cutting. Even though a manual miter saw can be used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a powered miter saw can be preferred as cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, most trim already comes with a primer coat of paint, but should you happen to be using unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to use a coat of primer to the wood then allow it to dry for no less than an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label the wall studs on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the wall/ceiling connection. These marks act as a reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Preceding installing the crown molding to the wall, turn it over so that it is in an upright position. Enlist an assistant to aid you in aligning the molding onto a second ladder and controlling it as you start. Commence from the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces may periodically appear along the molding and the walls and ceiling, as infrequently are the walls and ceilings absolutely flat. To resolve these spaces, you can seal them by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners are also rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, attach painter's tape at the top and bottom edges of the moldings at the points where they meet the wall and ceiling.
