Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of the straight walls in the area. For instance, you might need one 12-foot section of crown molding to trim every short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for every long wall, especially in a 165 square foot room that has a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: To begin the process, the crown molding piece must be measured and indicated for cutting. While a manual miter saw can be used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a powered miter saw is preferred since the cuts tend to be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, most trim already comes with a primer coat of paint, but should you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, you should use a coat of primer to the wood then allow it to dry for at least an hour before attaching it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the wall/ceiling connection. These marks will serve as a reference while joining the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before attaching the crown molding on the wall, turn it over so that it is in an upright position. Recruit an assistant to aid you in positioning the molding onto a second ladder and controlling it as you proceed. Commence from the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces may sometimes appear along the molding and both the walls and ceiling, as infrequently are the walls and ceilings perfectly even. To address these spaces, you can fill them up by using a bead of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any leftover gaps at the mitered corners are also rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, attach painter's tape along the top and bottom edges of the moldings at the points where they meet both the wall and ceiling.
