Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of all the linear walls in the area. For instance, you might need a single 12-foot strip of crown molding to cover each short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for each long wall, especially in a 165 square foot area that has two 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and marked before cutting. While a manual miter saw is used for used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a powered miter saw can be preferred since the cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, the majority of molding is already equipped featuring a paint primer, but if you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to the wood and allow it to cure for at least an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the junction of the wall and ceiling. These marks act as a point of reference while nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding to the wall, turn it over ensuring that it is upright. Enlist an assistant to help you in positioning the molding on a second ladder and controlling it as you proceed. Begin from the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces may sometimes arise between the molding and both the walls and ceiling, as infrequently are the walls and ceilings perfectly even. To address these spaces, it's possible to seal them by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners can also be filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, put painter's tape at the top and bottom edges of the moldings where they intersect both the wall and ceiling.
