Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of the straight walls in your space. For instance, it may require one 12-foot section of crown molding to trim every lesser wall, and two 8-foot sections for every long wall, especially in a 165 square foot room with a couple of 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked for cutting. Even though a manual miter saw is used for employed for miter-cutting crown molding, using a power miter saw can be recommended as cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim is already equipped with a paint primer, but should you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to the wood and let it dry for no less than an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label the wall studs on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the wall/ceiling connection. These marks will serve as a point of reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding to the wall, invert it so that it is upright. Enlist an assistant to help you in aligning the molding on a second ladder and controlling it as you start. Commence at the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps may periodically arise along the molding and the walls and ceiling, because rarely are the walls and ceilings absolutely flat. To address these spaces, you can fill them up by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners can also be filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, attach painter's tape at the upper and lower sections of the moldings at the points where they meet the wall and ceiling.
