Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of all the linear walls in the area. For instance, it may require one 12-foot strip of crown molding to cover each lesser wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. area with a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and marked for cutting. While a manual miter box and saw is used for used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a power miter saw is preferred as the cuts will be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim already comes with a primer coat of paint, but if you happen to be using bare wood molding, it's advisable to use a coat of primer to the wood then let it cure for at least an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Employ a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark the wall studs on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the wall/ceiling connection. These marks will serve as a point of reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding to the wall, invert it so that it is upright. Recruit an assistant to aid you in positioning the molding onto a second ladder and controlling it as you proceed. Begin at the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces may periodically appear between the molding and both the walls and ceiling, because infrequently are the walls and ceilings absolutely flat. To resolve these spaces, you can fill them up by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners are also rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, attach painter's tape at the top and bottom edges of the moldings where they intersect both the wall and ceiling.
