Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the total length of the straight walls in the area. To illustrate, you might need one 12-foot strip of crown molding to cover each short wall, and two 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 square foot area that has a couple of 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and indicated before cutting. While a manual miter saw is used for employed for miter-cutting crown molding, using a powered miter saw can be recommended since the cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim is already equipped with a primer coat of paint, but should you opt for bare wood molding, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to the wood then allow it to dry for no less than an hour before installing it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Employ a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the wall/ceiling connection. These labels will serve as a reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding to the wall, turn it over ensuring that it is upright. Recruit an assistant to help you in positioning the molding onto a second ladder and controlling it as you start. Begin at the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps may sometimes appear along the molding and both the walls and ceiling, because rarely are the walls and ceilings absolutely even. To resolve these spaces, you can fill them up by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any leftover gaps at the mitered corners are also rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, attach painter's tape at the top and bottom edges of the moldings where they intersect both the wall and ceiling.
