Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the total length of the straight walls in the area. For instance, it may require one 12-foot strip of crown molding to trim every short wall, and two 8-foot sections for every long wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. room with a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked for cutting. Even though a manual miter saw can be used for miter-cutting crown molding, preferring a powered miter saw is recommended as cuts tend to be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim is already equipped with a primer coat of paint, but should you happen to be using bare wood molding, you should apply a coat of primer to the wood and allow it to dry for no less than an hour before attaching it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the wall/ceiling connection. These labels will serve as a point of reference while joining the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before attaching the crown molding to the wall, turn it over ensuring that it is upright. Recruit an assistant to aid you in aligning the molding onto a second ladder and managing it as you proceed. Begin at the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces may periodically appear between the molding and the walls and ceiling, because infrequently are the walls and ceilings absolutely even. To address these spaces, you can fill them up by applying a line of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any remaining gaps at those mitered corners are also filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, attach painter's tape along the top and bottom edges of the moldings at the points where they meet the wall and ceiling.
