Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the total length of the straight walls in the area. For instance, it may require a single 12-foot section of crown molding to trim each lesser wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 square foot area with two 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: To begin the process, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and indicated for cutting. While a manual miter box and saw is used for employed for miter-cutting crown molding, using a power miter saw is recommended as the cuts will be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim is already equipped with a paint primer, but should you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, you should use a coat of primer to the wood and let it cure for at least an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label the wall studs on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the wall/ceiling connection. These marks act as a reference while joining the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding to the wall, turn it over ensuring that it is upright. Recruit an assistant to help you in aligning the molding onto a second ladder and managing it while you start. Commence at the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces may sometimes appear between the molding and both the walls and ceiling, because rarely are the walls and ceilings absolutely even. To resolve these spaces, you can fill them up by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners can also be filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, attach painter's tape at the top and bottom edges of the moldings at the points where they meet both the wall and ceiling.
