Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the entire measurement of all the linear walls in the area. To illustrate, you might need one 12-foot strip of crown molding to cover each lesser wall, and two 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. room with two 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and indicated before cutting. Even though a manual miter saw can be used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a power miter saw is recommended as the cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim is already equipped with a primer coat of paint, but if you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to use a coat of primer to the wood and let it dry for at least an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the junction of the wall and ceiling. These labels will serve as a reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding on the wall, invert it ensuring that it is upright. Enlist an assistant to aid you in aligning the molding on a second ladder and controlling it as you proceed. Commence from the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps might sometimes appear along the molding and the walls and ceiling, as rarely are the walls and ceilings absolutely even. To resolve these spaces, it's possible to fill them up by applying a bead of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any leftover gaps at the mitered corners are also rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, attach painter's tape at the top and bottom edges of the moldings at the points where they meet the wall and ceiling.
