Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of the straight walls in your space. To illustrate, you might need a single 12-foot section of crown molding to cover each short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 square foot room that has a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and indicated before cutting. While a manual miter box and saw is used for employed for making miter cuts on crown molding, preferring a power miter saw is preferred as cuts will be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, most trim is already equipped with a primer coat of paint, but should you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, you should use a coat of primer to the wood and allow it to dry for at least an hour before installing it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Employ a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the wall/ceiling connection. These labels will serve as a point of reference when joining the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding on the wall, invert it ensuring that it is in an upright position. Enlist an assistant to help you in positioning the molding onto a second ladder and controlling it as you proceed. Begin at the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces might sometimes appear along the molding and both the walls and ceiling, as rarely are these walls and ceilings perfectly flat. To resolve these spaces, you can fill them up by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any remaining gaps at those mitered corners are also rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, attach painter's tape along the top and bottom edges of the moldings where they intersect both the wall and ceiling.
