Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of all the linear walls in the area. To illustrate, you might need one 12-foot strip of crown molding to cover each short wall, and two 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. room that has a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and indicated for cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a powered miter saw is recommended as cuts tend to be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, most trim already comes with a primer coat of paint, but if you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to the wood then let it dry for no less than an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Employ a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label the wall studs on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the wall/ceiling connection. These marks act as a reference while nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Preceding installing the crown molding to the wall, turn it over so that it is in an upright position. Enlist an assistant to help you in positioning the molding on a second ladder and managing it while you proceed. Begin from the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps might sometimes arise between the molding and both the walls and ceiling, because rarely are these walls and ceilings perfectly flat. To resolve these spaces, you can seal them by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any leftover gaps at the mitered corners are also rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, put painter's tape along the top and bottom edges of the moldings at the points where they meet both the wall and ceiling.
