Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of all the linear walls in your space. To illustrate, you might need a single 12-foot section of crown molding to trim every lesser wall, and two 8-foot sections for every long wall, especially in a 165 square foot room with two 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and indicated before cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a powered miter saw is preferred since the cuts will be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim already comes with a primer coat of paint, but should you opt for bare wood molding, it's advisable to use a coat of primer to the wood and allow it to dry for no less than an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the junction of the wall and ceiling. These marks act as a reference when joining the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding on the wall, turn it over so that it is in an upright position. Recruit an assistant to help you in positioning the molding onto a second ladder and managing it while you proceed. Begin at the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps may sometimes arise between the molding and the walls and ceiling, because infrequently are the walls and ceilings absolutely flat. To address these spaces, it's possible to fill them up by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any remaining gaps at those mitered corners can also be filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, put painter's tape at the upper and lower sections of the moldings at the points where they meet the wall and ceiling.
