Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the entire measurement of the straight walls in your space. For instance, you might need a single 12-foot strip of crown molding to cover each short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 square foot room that has a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked before cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be employed for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a power miter saw is preferred since the cuts will be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, most trim already comes with a paint primer, but if you happen to be using unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to the wood then allow it to dry for at least an hour before installing it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark the wall studs on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the wall/ceiling connection. These marks act as a point of reference when joining the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding to the wall, invert it so that it is upright. Enlist an assistant to aid you in aligning the molding onto a second ladder and managing it as you start. Commence at the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps may sometimes arise along the molding and both the walls and ceiling, as infrequently are these walls and ceilings absolutely even. To address these spaces, you can seal them by using a bead of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any leftover gaps at the mitered corners can also be filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, attach painter's tape at the upper and lower sections of the moldings where they intersect both the wall and ceiling.
