Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of all the linear walls in your space. For instance, it may require one 12-foot strip of crown molding to trim every short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for every long wall, especially in a 165 square foot area with a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked before cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a power miter saw can be recommended as cuts will be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, most trim already comes with a paint primer, but if you opt for bare wood molding, you should apply a coat of primer to the wood then let it cure for no less than an hour before attaching it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the junction of the wall and ceiling. These labels act as a point of reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before attaching the crown molding to the wall, turn it over so that it is in an upright position. Enlist an assistant to help you in aligning the molding onto a second ladder and controlling it as you start. Begin from the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces may periodically arise between the molding and both the walls and ceiling, because rarely are the walls and ceilings perfectly flat. To address these spaces, it's possible to fill them up by applying a bead of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any leftover gaps at the mitered corners can also be rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, put painter's tape along the upper and lower sections of the moldings where they intersect both the wall and ceiling.
