Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of all the linear walls in the area. To illustrate, you might need a single 12-foot strip of crown molding to trim every short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for every large wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. area that has a couple of 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and indicated before cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be employed for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a power miter saw can be preferred as cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim is already equipped with a primer coat of paint, but if you opt for bare wood molding, it's advisable to use a coat of primer to the wood and allow it to dry for no less than an hour before attaching it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the junction of the wall and ceiling. These marks will serve as a reference while joining the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before attaching the crown molding to the wall, invert it ensuring that it is in an upright position. Recruit an assistant to help you in aligning the molding onto a second ladder and managing it as you start. Begin from the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps might sometimes appear along the molding and both the walls and ceiling, as infrequently are these walls and ceilings perfectly even. To resolve these spaces, you can fill them up by applying a bead of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any remaining gaps at the mitered corners can also be filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, put painter's tape along the top and bottom edges of the moldings where they intersect both the wall and ceiling.
