Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the total length of the straight walls in your space. For instance, it may require a single 12-foot strip of crown molding to cover every short wall, and two 8-foot sections for every long wall, especially in a 165 square foot area that has a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and indicated before cutting. While a manual miter box and saw is used for employed for miter-cutting crown molding, preferring a power miter saw can be recommended since the cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, most trim already comes with a primer coat of paint, but should you happen to be using unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to the wood and let it cure for at least an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label the wall studs on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the wall/ceiling connection. These labels will serve as a reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding on the wall, turn it over ensuring that it is upright. Recruit an assistant to help you in positioning the molding on a second ladder and controlling it as you start. Begin at the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps might sometimes appear along the molding and both the walls and ceiling, because rarely are the walls and ceilings perfectly even. To resolve these spaces, you can seal them by applying a bead of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any remaining gaps at the mitered corners can also be rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, attach painter's tape at the top and bottom edges of the moldings where they intersect both the wall and ceiling.
