Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of all the linear walls in the area. To illustrate, you might need a single 12-foot section of crown molding to cover every short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for every large wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. room that has a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and indicated before cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be used for miter-cutting crown molding, preferring a powered miter saw is preferred since cuts will be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim is already equipped featuring a primer coat of paint, but should you happen to be using bare wood molding, it's advisable to use a coat of primer to the wood then allow it to dry for at least an hour before attaching it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the junction of the wall and ceiling. These marks will serve as a reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before attaching the crown molding on the wall, invert it ensuring that it is upright. Recruit an assistant to aid you in positioning the molding on a second ladder and controlling it as you start. Begin from the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps may periodically arise along the molding and the walls and ceiling, because rarely are the walls and ceilings absolutely even. To address these spaces, you can seal them by using a bead of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any remaining gaps at those mitered corners are also rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, attach painter's tape along the top and bottom edges of the moldings at the points where they meet the wall and ceiling.
