Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of all the linear walls in the area. For instance, it may require one 12-foot section of crown molding to trim each short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for each long wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. area with a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: To begin the process, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked for cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a power miter saw is recommended since cuts tend to be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, most trim already comes with a primer coat of paint, but if you happen to be using unpainted raw wood molding, you should use a coat of primer to the wood and allow it to cure for no less than an hour before attaching it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the wall/ceiling connection. These labels act as a point of reference when joining the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before attaching the crown molding on the wall, turn it over so that it is in an upright position. Enlist an assistant to aid you in aligning the molding onto a second ladder and controlling it while you proceed. Commence from the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps may sometimes appear along the molding and both the walls and ceiling, because infrequently are these walls and ceilings absolutely even. To resolve these spaces, you can seal them by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners can also be filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, put painter's tape at the top and bottom edges of the moldings where they intersect both the wall and ceiling.
