Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of the straight walls in your space. To illustrate, you might need a single 12-foot strip of crown molding to cover each short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 square foot room with a couple of 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and indicated before cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a power miter saw can be recommended as cuts tend to be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, the majority of molding already comes with a primer coat of paint, but should you opt for bare wood molding, you should use a coat of primer to the wood then allow it to cure for at least an hour before attaching it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the junction of the wall and ceiling. These labels act as a reference while nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before attaching the crown molding to the wall, turn it over so that it is upright. Recruit an assistant to help you in aligning the molding on a second ladder and managing it while you start. Begin from the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps might sometimes arise along the molding and the walls and ceiling, because infrequently are the walls and ceilings absolutely flat. To resolve these spaces, you can seal them by applying a bead of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any remaining gaps at the mitered corners can also be rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, put painter's tape at the upper and lower sections of the moldings where they intersect the wall and ceiling.
