Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of the straight walls in your space. To illustrate, you might need one 12-foot section of crown molding to cover each lesser wall, and two 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. area with two 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: To begin the process, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked before cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be employed for miter-cutting crown molding, using a powered miter saw can be preferred as cuts will be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim already comes with a paint primer, but if you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, you should apply a coat of primer to the wood then allow it to cure for at least an hour before attaching it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label the wall studs on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the wall/ceiling connection. These marks will serve as a point of reference while nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before attaching the crown molding to the wall, invert it so that it is in an upright position. Enlist an assistant to aid you in positioning the molding onto a second ladder and controlling it as you proceed. Begin at the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps may periodically appear along the molding and the walls and ceiling, because infrequently are these walls and ceilings absolutely flat. To address these spaces, you can fill them up by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any remaining gaps at the mitered corners are also filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, attach painter's tape along the upper and lower sections of the moldings at the points where they meet the wall and ceiling.
