Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of the straight walls in the area. For instance, it may require one 12-foot strip of crown molding to trim every short wall, and two 8-foot sections for every large wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. area that has a couple of 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: To begin the process, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked before cutting. While a manual miter saw is used for used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a powered miter saw can be preferred as cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim is already equipped with a primer coat of paint, but if you happen to be using unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to the wood then allow it to cure for no less than an hour before attaching it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Employ a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the wall/ceiling connection. These marks will serve as a reference while nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before attaching the crown molding on the wall, invert it ensuring that it is in an upright position. Enlist an assistant to help you in aligning the molding on a second ladder and controlling it while you start. Commence from the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps might sometimes arise between the molding and the walls and ceiling, because rarely are the walls and ceilings perfectly flat. To address these spaces, it's possible to seal them by using a bead of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any remaining gaps at the mitered corners are also rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, put painter's tape along the upper and lower sections of the moldings where they intersect the wall and ceiling.
