Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the entire measurement of the straight walls in the area. To illustrate, it may require a single 12-foot strip of crown molding to trim every short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for every long wall, especially in a 165 square foot room with a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and indicated before cutting. While a manual miter saw can be employed for miter-cutting crown molding, using a power miter saw can be preferred since cuts tend to be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, the majority of molding is already equipped with a primer coat of paint, but if you opt for bare wood molding, it's advisable to use a coat of primer to the wood then let it dry for at least an hour before installing it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the junction of the wall and ceiling. These marks will serve as a point of reference while nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding on the wall, invert it so that it is upright. Enlist an assistant to aid you in aligning the molding onto a second ladder and managing it as you proceed. Begin from the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces may periodically appear between the molding and both the walls and ceiling, because rarely are the walls and ceilings perfectly flat. To address these spaces, you can seal them by applying a bead of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners can also be filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, attach painter's tape at the upper and lower sections of the moldings at the points where they meet both the wall and ceiling.
