Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of the straight walls in the area. To illustrate, you might need one 12-foot strip of crown molding to cover every short wall, and two 8-foot sections for every long wall, especially in a 165 square foot room with two 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and marked before cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be employed for miter-cutting crown molding, preferring a powered miter saw can be recommended as the cuts will be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, most trim is already equipped featuring a primer coat of paint, but if you happen to be using bare wood molding, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to the wood and allow it to dry for at least an hour before installing it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the junction of the wall and ceiling. These marks act as a reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding to the wall, turn it over so that it is upright. Enlist an assistant to aid you in positioning the molding onto a second ladder and controlling it as you start. Commence from the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces may periodically arise along the molding and the walls and ceiling, because infrequently are the walls and ceilings perfectly flat. To resolve these spaces, you can fill them up by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any leftover gaps at the mitered corners can also be filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, put painter's tape along the upper and lower sections of the moldings where they intersect the wall and ceiling.
