Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of all the linear walls in your space. For instance, you might need one 12-foot section of crown molding to trim every short wall, and two 8-foot sections for every long wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. room with two 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked before cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be used for miter-cutting crown molding, using a powered miter saw is recommended since the cuts tend to be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, the majority of molding already comes featuring a primer coat of paint, but if you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to use a coat of primer to the wood then allow it to dry for at least an hour before attaching it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the junction of the wall and ceiling. These labels act as a reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Preceding attaching the crown molding on the wall, turn it over so that it is upright. Enlist an assistant to aid you in aligning the molding onto a second ladder and managing it while you proceed. Begin from the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps may periodically arise between the molding and both the walls and ceiling, because infrequently are the walls and ceilings perfectly flat. To address these spaces, it's possible to fill them up by using a bead of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners are also rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, put painter's tape along the upper and lower sections of the moldings at the points where they meet both the wall and ceiling.
