Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the entire measurement of the straight walls in the area. To illustrate, you might need a single 12-foot section of crown molding to trim each short wall, and two 8-foot sections for each long wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. room with a couple of 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked before cutting. While a manual miter saw can be used for miter-cutting crown molding, using a powered miter saw can be preferred since the cuts tend to be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, the majority of molding already comes featuring a paint primer, but should you opt for bare wood molding, you should apply a coat of primer to the wood and allow it to dry for at least an hour before installing it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the wall/ceiling connection. These marks will serve as a point of reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Preceding installing the crown molding to the wall, invert it ensuring that it is in an upright position. Enlist an assistant to help you in aligning the molding on a second ladder and controlling it while you proceed. Begin at the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces might sometimes arise along the molding and the walls and ceiling, as rarely are these walls and ceilings perfectly even. To address these spaces, it's possible to fill them up by applying a bead of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners are also filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, put painter's tape along the upper and lower sections of the moldings where they intersect the wall and ceiling.
