Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the total length of all the linear walls in the area. For instance, it may require one 12-foot section of crown molding to trim each lesser wall, and two 8-foot sections for each long wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. room with two 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and indicated for cutting. Even though a manual miter box and saw can be employed for making miter cuts on crown molding, preferring a power miter saw is recommended as the cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim already comes with a paint primer, but should you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, you should apply a coat of primer to the wood and allow it to cure for no less than an hour before attaching it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the junction of the wall and ceiling. These marks act as a point of reference when joining the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Preceding attaching the crown molding to the wall, turn it over ensuring that it is in an upright position. Recruit an assistant to help you in aligning the molding on a second ladder and controlling it while you start. Begin from the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps may sometimes appear between the molding and both the walls and ceiling, because rarely are the walls and ceilings absolutely even. To resolve these spaces, you can fill them up by applying a bead of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any leftover gaps at the mitered corners are also filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, put painter's tape at the upper and lower sections of the moldings at the points where they meet both the wall and ceiling.
