Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the total length of the straight walls in your space. For instance, it may require one 12-foot section of crown molding to trim every short wall, and two 8-foot sections for every large wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. area with a couple of 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked for cutting. While a manual miter box and saw can be used for making miter cuts on crown molding, preferring a power miter saw is preferred as cuts tend to be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim is already equipped featuring a primer coat of paint, but should you happen to be using bare wood molding, you should apply a coat of primer to the wood and let it dry for no less than an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Employ a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark the wall studs on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the junction of the wall and ceiling. These marks act as a reference when joining the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding to the wall, invert it so that it is in an upright position. Recruit an assistant to help you in positioning the molding onto a second ladder and controlling it as you start. Begin at the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps may sometimes arise between the molding and the walls and ceiling, as infrequently are the walls and ceilings absolutely even. To address these spaces, you can fill them up by applying a line of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any remaining gaps at those mitered corners are also rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, put painter's tape along the upper and lower sections of the moldings at the points where they meet the wall and ceiling.
