Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Measure the total length of all the linear walls in the area. To illustrate, you might need one 12-foot section of crown molding to trim every short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for every large wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. area with a couple of 15-foot walls and another two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and marked before cutting. While a manual miter saw can be used for making miter cuts on crown molding, preferring a power miter saw can be recommended since cuts will be more precise.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, the majority of molding already comes featuring a paint primer, but if you opt for unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to use a coat of primer to the wood and let it dry for at least an hour before installing it to the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks a few inches below the wall/ceiling connection. These marks will serve as a point of reference when joining the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding on the wall, invert it so that it is in an upright position. Recruit an assistant to aid you in aligning the molding onto a second ladder and managing it while you start. Begin from the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces may sometimes arise along the molding and both the walls and ceiling, as rarely are the walls and ceilings perfectly even. To resolve these spaces, you can fill them up by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any remaining gaps at those mitered corners are also rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, attach painter's tape at the top and bottom edges of the moldings where they intersect both the wall and ceiling.
