Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the total length of all the linear walls in the area. For instance, you might need one 12-foot section of crown molding to trim every short wall, and a pair of 8-foot sections for every long wall, especially in a 165 sq. ft. area that has a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece needs to be measured and marked for cutting. Even though a manual miter box and saw can be used for miter-cutting crown molding, preferring a powered miter saw can be recommended as the cuts tend to be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: Usually, most trim already comes with a paint primer, but should you happen to be using bare wood molding, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to the wood and let it dry for no less than an hour before attaching it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Employ a stud finder and a pencil to locate and label the wall studs on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the wall/ceiling connection. These labels will serve as a point of reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before attaching the crown molding on the wall, turn it over so that it is in an upright position. Recruit an assistant to help you in positioning the molding on a second ladder and managing it as you proceed. Commence at the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps might sometimes appear along the molding and both the walls and ceiling, as rarely are the walls and ceilings absolutely even. To resolve these spaces, you can fill them up by using a bead of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners can also be rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, attach painter's tape at the upper and lower sections of the moldings at the points where they meet both the wall and ceiling.
